Did you know that there is a projected nine percent growth in the home renovation department this year alone? In 2022, that number is expected to increase another four percent.
Many homeowners are returning to their home improvement projects, and 2022 has shown just how drastically the housing market has changed.
Vinyl siding and stucco are two popular sidings that you might be looking at replacing. What are the costs associated with both of them and how do they compare?
Now has never been a better time to find a local contractor for siding replacement before that colder weather hits.
Vinyl Siding Cost
Nationally you can expect to pay between $8000 and $15,100 to replace vinyl siding. Siding is the protective material on the outside of your home that protects against weather and provides some insulation.
Vinyl siding has been popular since the 1990s and is widely used in the Northeast and Midwest. It can wear out from sun exposure, weather, and time. It is fairly resistant to bugs but unfortunately does not hold up as well to adverse weather.
For vinyl siding in an approximately 2,500 square foot home, it can cost upwards of $13,000 or more to install.
Vinyl siding adds to the curb appeal of your home if you are looking at selling it soon. In fact, vinyl can return up to 75 percent of the cost. That is probably part of the reason it encompasses 27 percent of the housing marketplace.
However, there are a few variables that can affect the total cost projected above.
Additional Vinyl Siding Costs
Smooth vinyl is going to be the least expensive material. If you want a wood shake look, it will add to the price. Additional expenses could be trim, labor, and removal.
Vinyl material is usually slightly less expensive than stucco. The price can range between $2.10 to $7.00 per square foot. Vinyl siding removal can cost up to a few thousand dollars and trim can range from an additional $3 to $5. In total, this can raise the price of trim to a few hundred dollars, at minimum.
Some companies come equipped with disposal methods but don’t be surprised if you are tacked on an additional $400 fee (or more) for disposal.
If you are just looking at a siding replacement for a small section, you can pay closer to the low $400s or upwards of $700 based on a 200 square foot section. If you have damage to only one section, this is a much more cost-friendly option than replacing the entire siding.
Lastly, vinyl insulation ranges from $6 to almost $13 per square foot and can contribute to lower energy bills.
Stucco Siding Cost
Nationally you can expect to pay between $9000 and $18,000 to replace vinyl siding. Arguably the two most common siding materials are stucco and vinyl. Stucco siding is more common in the West, where it comprises over half the marketplace. Choosing new siding is a tough decision – stucco works well with masonry or wood-sheathed homes.
Stucco works a bit differently than other siding materials. It is a cement mixture, and the outer layer can be painted. Stucco finish does have a slight tint to it, so it does not need to be painted.
It works well to seal in heat and is ideal in colder environments where snow and rain are prevalent. However, stucco is a bit more difficult to install and can get damaged easily.
Because of the materials used, it is a long process to repair or replace the siding. If properly maintained, you can expect stucco to last up to 50 years.
Stucco cost is relatively inexpensive, but you will need to add in higher labor costs. The job, unfortunately, will take a bit longer than installing vinyl siding.
It can cost $6.00 to $9.00 per square foot for stucco finishes. For 1,000 square foot home, this will cost between $6,200 to $9,000 or up to $18,000 for a 2,000 square foot house.
Additionally, labor can average $4 to $10 per square foot. It is riskier to work on stucco finishes yourself, as you are more likely to have cracks and integrity issues in the stucco once it finishes drying.
Vinyl vs. Stucco – The Takeaway
What is the average price of siding for a house? Siding can cost anywhere from approximately $5,000 to $14,500. Both siding options are relatively close in cost per square foot, with vinyl siding having a slight edge. Additionally, you can expect to pay higher costs of labor for stucco due to the time-consuming nature of the job.
Most projections expect vinyl siding to last closer to 60 years, which is similar to the 50-year benchmark of stucco finishes.
Labor and contractor costs can be 20 to 30 percent of the cost of the siding replacement. However, you save yourself the headache and pressure to find budget-friendly materials by trying to do it yourself.
Additionally, the complexity of stucco finishes requires skilled workers. Vinyl is a bit easier to try and fix yourself. However, the housing market has led to an increase in the costs of materials.
A general contractor will more easily locate quality materials at the best price versus trying to do it yourself. With that in mind, you can project higher prices for materials alone.
In some instances, the prices for certain materials have increased above 100% during the past year.
Don’t Wait
Fall is one of the better times to work on home renovations. If you live somewhere colder, don’t wait any longer. Addressing your siding right now will ensure that your house is well insulated and protected against the weather.
Vinyl siding and stucco finishes are both durable materials that can insulate your home. Stucco will be a bit more expensive and time-consuming but creates a smooth seal against the exterior whereas, vinyl siding is more cost-friendly and easier to repair.
