From replacing windows to installing new toilets and even some roof work, the reason for this boom in home improvement is aging homes. Nearly 40 percent of all the houses in the United States are more than 50 years old, and homeowners are sprucing up their bathrooms as part of bringing their homes up to code.

Replacing a toilet can involve several moving parts, such as turning off the main supply line, replacing the bowl, and other toilet parts. Due to this involved process, many homeowners end up hiring a plumber to carry out the installation of a new toilet. But how much do plumbers charge for their service? Let’s find out in this comprehensive guide.

How Much Does it Cost to Install a Toilet?

The typical toilet installation cost by a professional will run you between $275 and $459. Note that these prices do not factor in how much the toilet itself will cost. As a homeowner, you will be in charge of supplying it.

The cost of the toilet will vary with each model’s features and the kind of material used to produce it. A basic toilet will cost you less than a smart one, one with concealed trap ways, or even a pressure-assisted one.

Labor Cost for Toilet Installation

In general, the cost of labor for a plumber to install a toilet is going to run about $250, give or take $100. The labor cost for toilet installation can vary depending on several factors:

  1. Region: Rates can vary widely by location. Urban areas or regions with a high cost of living might have higher plumber rates than rural areas.
  2. Complexity of the Job: If the installation involves more than just replacing an old toilet with a new one (for example, moving plumbing lines or installing a new flange), it will likely be more expensive.
  3. Type of Toilet: Some high-end toilets or those with complex features might require more time or expertise to install.
  4. Existing Conditions: If there’s damage or if old parts are difficult to remove, this can add to the labor time and cost.
  5. Plumber’s Experience: A more experienced plumber might charge more than someone just starting out.

That said, the typical labor cost for a standard toilet installation in the U.S. ranged from $180 to $300, but it can go higher based on the factors mentioned above. This is just the labor cost; it doesn’t include the price of the toilet or any additional parts or fixtures.

For the most accurate estimate, it’s best to get multiple quotes from local plumbers or plumbing companies. They can provide a more precise figure based on your specific situation and current local rates.

Tips to Save Money on Labor Costs

  1. Do your research: Get multiple quotes from different professionals to ensure you’re getting a fair price for the job. Be sure to compare their experience, reputation, and customer reviews.
  2. Bundle projects: If you have other plumbing or bathroom renovation projects planned, consider bundling them together. You may be able to negotiate a lower labor cost if the plumber or contractor is working on multiple tasks at once.
  3. Schedule during off-peak times: Try to schedule your toilet installation during a less busy time for the plumber or contractor, such as during the winter months or weekdays. They may be more willing to offer a lower rate during these slower periods.
  4. DIY: If you have plumbing experience or are comfortable with basic home repairs, consider installing the toilet yourself. This can save you a significant amount of money on labor costs. However, if you’re unsure about your abilities or the complexity of the project, it’s best to hire a professional to ensure a proper installation.

Understanding the labor cost for toilet installation is crucial for homeowners looking to upgrade their bathrooms. With the average cost ranging from $100 to $300, it’s essential to consider factors such as location, complexity, type of toilet, and the professional’s experience when estimating the cost. By researching, bundling projects, scheduling during off-peak times, or even doing it yourself, you can save money on labor costs and enjoy a new, efficient, and stylish toilet in your bathroom.

The Most Popular Types of Toilet Bowl Shapes

Types Of ToiletsWhen it comes to toilet bowls, two designs dominate the market. These are elongated and round toilet bowls.

Round toilet bowls have existed in the market as far back as when toilets were first introduced. On the other hand, elongated toilet bowls, are a relatively recent design addition to the market. While each of these two designs will serve the primary function just fine, there are some differences you will have to consider when shopping for a toilet.

1. The Appearance

The most obvious difference is in their appearance. A round toilet bowl is circular, and therefore it will extend less into the room.

An elongated one leans toward the oval shape. Thus, it ends up taking up more space.

2. Comfort

When it comes to how comfortable each of them feels when you use them, the elongated bowl tends to have a slight advantage. That’s because its bigger shape can accommodate you more than the round bowl.

3. Ease of Maintenance

The maintenance of a toilet bowl is a necessary consideration when you want to install a toilet. In this regard, an elongated toilet bowl has a better advantage than a round-shaped one.

That’s because the elongated bowl (in some brands) sports a smaller crevice around its underside. Consequently, it is easier for you to use a brush when cleaning it compared to the round bowl.

4. Cost

The elongated toilet bowl typically costs more than a rounded one.

Types and Costs of Toilet Flush Systems

Toilet Flush SystemsThe type of flush system toilet does considerably influence the toilet you finally end up selecting. Each flush system has its strength and, therefore, the best way to apply it. Some of these systems include:

1. Dual Flush System

Do you want to save water? A dual flush system uses a standard flush for solid waste matter but a water-saving flush for liquids.

Average Cost: $251 – $330

2. Rear Flush System

Average Cost: $380 – $389

3. Gravity Flush System

As the name suggests, this kind of flush toilet depends on gravity to pull the waste down the pipes and requires a lot of water as well.

Average Cost: $175-$402

4. Double Cyclone Flush System

A double cyclone flush toilet uses two nozzles backed by a propulsion system that allows more water to circulate in a cyclone motion.

Average Cost: $530 – $530

Best Toilet Brands5. Pressure-Assisted Flush System

A pressure-assisted toilet will use pressurized air to push water into the bowl. As a result, it is a powerful system that’s suitable for large bowls.

Average Cost: $290 – $301

6. Vacuum-Assisted Flush System

True to the name, this kind of flush system will push air into the vent pipe before it opens for waste. The air will then create a vacuum that pulls the waste through.

Average Cost: $448 – $562

7. Tank Fill Valve System

A tank fill valve flush system uses a floating ball attached to a floating rod to fill the tank. The rod is the one that activates the plunger on the floating ball to either allow or stop water from flowing into the tank.

Average Cost: $100 – $288

8. Flapper-Flush Valve System

With this system, a flapper opens or closes by way of a plate hinged at one side. The flapper connects to a chain that will allow and stop the water from flowing into the tank.

Toilet Installation: Choosing the Right Toilet for Your Bathroom

Toilet installation may seem like a straightforward process, but choosing the right toilet for your bathroom is crucial to ensure optimal performance and efficiency. With so many options available on the market, it can be overwhelming to decide which one to choose. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a toilet for your bathroom.

  1. Size and Shape

Toilets come in a variety of sizes and shapes, and it’s essential to choose one that fits well in your bathroom. Measure the distance from the wall to the floor bolts to ensure you choose a toilet that fits correctly. Additionally, consider the shape of the toilet bowl, as it can affect comfort and ease of use. Round bowls are typically more compact, while elongated bowls provide additional seating space.

  1. Flushing Mechanism

The flushing mechanism is one of the most critical features of a toilet, as it affects water usage and efficiency. Older toilets typically use more water per flush than newer models, which can impact your water bill. Choose a toilet with a high-efficiency flushing system that uses less water per flush while still providing adequate flushing power.

  1. Height

Toilets come in different heights, and it’s essential to choose one that is comfortable for all users. Standard toilets are typically between 14 and 15 inches tall, while comfort-height toilets are taller, usually between 16 and 19 inches. Consider the needs of your household, such as elderly or disabled individuals, when choosing the height of your toilet.

  1. Style

Toilets come in various styles, from traditional to contemporary, and it’s essential to choose one that matches the décor of your bathroom. Consider the color and finish of the toilet, as well as any additional features such as soft-close seats or bidet attachments.

  1. Price

Toilets come at a range of price points, and it’s essential to choose one that fits your budget while still meeting your needs. Consider the long-term cost savings of a high-efficiency toilet, which can offset the initial cost.

In conclusion, choosing the right toilet for your bathroom involves considering the size and shape, flushing mechanism, height, style, and price. By taking these factors into account, you can ensure that your toilet installation meets your needs and provides optimal performance and efficiency for years to come.

  1. I just found a plumber to install/replace my toilet for $225. Seems a bit high since I’m providing the toilet (American Standard). Is my skepticism fair? 2nd I agree with Kelly before me… I would NEVER hire a plumber to install a toilet for $600 – $800! You’ve got to be kidding me… Are those toilets made of gold?!?

  2. No way can I or no plumber can compete with these prices.
First off in my area most customers don’t buy there toilets, they expect the plumber to supply it and you don’t mention anything about the toilet flange. In most cases there is rust or broken components on the flange or the floor ma be rotten under the toilet. This in most cases can add several hours of time not including driving back to the plumbing store or home store for more materials. If in a perfect world with best case scenario where the old toilet taken out, no repairs or changes and install new toilet, the cost would have to be at min.$ 289 plus cost of the toilet, wax seal, supply line and maybe silicone. Total estimate 600 to 800 for low to mid grade cost toilet. Hire end toilets can cost 400 to 2000 alone.

    • I can install a toilet in less than 2 hours and I am not a plumber. This post said the cost is between $122 and $228. Note: That was ONLY referring to install costs. So, you don’t think any plumber would install a toilet at a rate of $114 per hour? I think I’d stay away from your company if you say no plumber could do it. I would never call someone to install a toilet if they quoted me 600 – 800.

  3. Where the **** do you get your pricing from? There’s no way in **** a legitimate plumbing company will be able to charge the prices you quoted and remain in business with happy employees. The prices you have given are prices people would pay a handyman to botch the install and cause additional repair cost. (edited for language)

My husband and I have talked about getting new toilets installed in both of our home’s bathrooms to save water. I’m glad I read your article and got a better idea of what types of toilets we’ll be able to choose from!

  7. I need to have a new toilet installed, but I’m not sure how to go about it. It makes sense that I would want to find a professional plumber to help me out on it! It’s good to know average prices, but I’ll have to look into actual plumbers and see how much they charge. That way, I can ensure that I can afford the installation.
